Dean Perrus
Dean Perrus’s whole life is story of passion. Born in 1949 in Washington DC and raised in
Alexandria VA, to Greek parents, Dean attributes his tumultuous childhood as a driving force in
developing a wandering spirit combined with a passionate desire to express himself.
Dean’s first creative outlet for his talent was music. This gift allowed him to convey a wide
range of emotions. Dean did not go unnoticed. By the age of 12, Dean was performing as a
professional drummer, often being snuck in through the back doors of establishments. At 13,
Dean won the all-state music competition for drumming. Dean continued playing even while
serving his country in the Marine Corps.
Upon his discharge, Dean explored construction as a career alternative. While successfully
navigating his career and working his way up from an apprentice to a superintendent, Dean
floundered in his personal life with several failed marriages and an estrangement from his
children. He returned to drumming and toured the United with several famous bands, including
the Spinners and the Greg Allman Band. Dean succumbed more and more to the rock‘n’roll
lifestyle, but yearned for some deeper meaning to give zest to his life.
While in Costa Rica, Dean was in despair and questioned his purpose on earth. In a moment of
extreme anguish, he found himself yelling up to the sky “Why God?” To his everlasting
gratitude, God answered. Dean heard faint music playing from a nearby church. Dean walked in,
sat down, and continued his divine interrogation. Receiving no answers, he dejectedly walked
out of the church and slowly headed down the road. Suddenly, a man ran out of the church to
beckon him to speak with the pastor. The pastor told Dean that he believed this is where God
meant him to be. Dean’s life took a dramatic change. Dean not only became the Director of
Music for the church, but shortly thereafter he was baptized in a nearby jungle river.
Learning of his daughter’s fight with cancer, Dean quickly returned to the U.S. and was able to
share the last four years of her life. Dean never forgot the lessons that saved him and the
importance of living his dreams. He pursued his love of music as Musical director of several
Churches. Capturing the beauty of God’s creation became Dean’s primary passion. He found
himself taking photos at every opportunity. Peace and a sense of grounding in God’s works filled
his soul.
Married now only to his photography, Dean lives his life cleanly. As a proud father and
grandfather of six, Dean balances his time between his family in Florida and his travels to
capture the beauty of God’s world. Dean is dedicated to his 4 passions - photography, life,
family and God.
