Martin Sherman
I began painting at 18 years of age without formal instruction. I attended Hamilton College where I decided to change from biology to a combined studio and art history major, but still continued premedical studies. There I was mentored by Professor James Penny, the former vice president of the Art Students League in NYC in the 1940's. While at Hamilton, I was also able to take art courses at Skidmore College and Cornell University. I went on to medical school and only rarely did an occasional piece for the next 40 years while practicing pediatrics in Fort Myers.
In the last 5+ years I began to devote my full attention to creating works with predominantly acrylics, charcoal, and glazes on canvas. Being red-green color blind has led to interesting choices of color palates and a fascination with light on objects. My work ranges from recognizable images to completely non objective. Sometimes I use familiar signage to explore social and contemporary issues. Ultimately, I strive to create works that excite my own visual and emotional aesthetic and share them with others. |
