Marlene Phipps

I am a mixed media collage artist, creating textured, layered works. Often my process begins with a sketch, where I build a composition from multiple layers—carefully assembled with clipping masks, blending modes, various tools, and color grading techniques to achieve a harmonious color palette.
Once my concept takes shape, I recreate it on cradle board, bringing it to life with a combination of personal images, assets from curated libraries, ephemera and hand-crafted papers. I enjoy the tactile nature of analog mediums, with each phase offering new creative possibilities. The final piece evolves through cutting, pasting, painting and the addition of elements, until I feel the work is complete. To finish, I seal the piece with cold wax, enhancing its depth and inviting both visual and tactile engagement.

Nature is a constant source of inspiration in my work, and I often draw from everyday experiences. For me, art is a way to express creativity, explore emotions, reflect on personal experiences, and provoke thought. I hope my work encourages viewers to connect with the textures, stories, and layers embedded within each piece, sparking a meaningful dialogue with the art itself. Art has always been a means for me to express my creativity and foster an emotional connection with those who encounter it.
