Missy Cowan
Missy Cowan, Watercolor Artist
Cowan's interest in art began in elementary school, but halfway through college, she discovered a new branch of education, teaching children with learning disabilities, that inspired her and became her career.
In 2007, after her two children graduated from college and Cowan eventually retired, she decided it was time to "get back in touch" with her creative side.
Cowan's return to art after a 30-year detour was more than just getting back on the same road. She had previously created abstract, geometric compositions with acrylics and colored pencil, but this time around decided to try watercolors.
In the years since she began painting, she has developed a true passion for transparent watercolors and the wide variety of techniques they offer. “I can get lost in a painting. The process itself becomes a meditation of water and color and the energy they create on the paper. Creating luminous, nature-inspired images, including macro views of flowers, grasses and trees, and birds, Cowan amplifies color and pushes forward technique by experimenting on rice paper, wax as a resist, granulating pigments and other strategies aimed at exploring texture.
Missy is a former member of the Michigan Watercolor Society, Ann Arbor Women Artists and the Chelsea, MI Artists Guild.
Before relocating to Florida, her work was selected for inclusion in both the 2012 and 2013 Michigan Watercolor Society annual exhibitions. Two of her pieces are on permanent display at the Chelsea Community Hospital in Michigan.
Missy was awarded 2nd place for a watercolor batik painting at the Art Council of Southwest Florida 60th Anniversary Celebration Show in 2025.
Missy’s work is now included in private collections in 28 states.
