Acrylic, mixed media
Frances Hawbaker
Creating art has always been a part of my life. I’ve worked with many media that include; fiber art, clay, sculpture, wood, metals, acrylics and oils. Now living in southwest Florida since 2020, I’ve been inspired by the mysteries of the water and the magnificent southwest Florida skies. My artwork utilizes shapes, forms and color to evoke an emotional response and set a specific mood. Through my art, I strive to capture the essence of the environment in landscapes or a mood utilizing texture, color and layering techniques. My process involves experimenting with textural surfaces that serve as an emotional response to the overall composition leading its way to abstraction from once identifiable shapes, pushing the boundaries of a traditional landscape painting.
I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA degree and continued my art education at Carlow University with a masters degree in Art Education. I worked as an Senior High School Art Teacher for 24 years with a focus on Advanced Placement Art. I won a contested commission of two outdoor urban Mural’s funded by thesproutfund.org in Pittsburgh, PA. Both murals still exist today. My work has been shown in various art galleries in the Pittsburgh area including the Three Rivers Art Juried exhibition, and the Cranberry Arts member show, winning first place award.
I have been graced with retirement enabling me to become more immersed in my own artwork, enjoy outdoor sports, enjoy our two grandsons, and three adult children all here in Southwest Florida.
